The new Wii U TV console from Nintendo also comes with New Super Mario Bros. U, the latest title in the popular jump'n'run series featuring the mustachioed video game hero. In addition to traditionally structured levels, this fun 2D side-scroller contains some special game modes and functions that are sure to delight Mario fans and Wii U fans alike.
New Super Mario Bros. U is the latest title in the popular jump'n'run series
In the new adventure, Mario takes on new forms and players can join in as their Mii characters. The game also introduces Boost Mode, which can add blocks or help players avoid their opponents, lets Mario uncover secrets, and allows multiple players to work together to complete speed runs in record time.
challenge mode
In this variant, the aim is to achieve certain goals under difficult conditions. For example, the players must complete a course without picking up a single coin or touching the ground. Single players can try their hand at four categories: Time Attack, Coin Collection, 1-Up Rally and Miscellaneous.
New modes, characters, items and features ensure long-lasting gaming fun
The latter, in turn, consists of various challenges. In boost mode challenges, two players can compete at the same time. Once a challenge is completed, a replay video of the game is saved so that players can watch their achievements again and again and show them to their friends.
coin hunt
In this mode, up to four players race and jump to collect the most coins. Meanwhile, another player can use the Wii U GamePad to place up to four temporary boost blocks at once, helping fellow players get to hard-to-reach coins.
In challenge mode, you have to achieve particularly demanding goals
For individual courses, the GamePad can also be used to distribute the coins as desired and thus customize the course. This customized course can be saved so that players can run through it later using the Wii Remote.
map view
Since Super Mario World in 1992, New Super Mario Bros. U is the first side-scrolling adventure in the series with an overview map that shows all game worlds and courses and makes them accessible without transitions. Secret exits keep opening up on the map. If you use them, you change the map and discover helpful shortcuts. All worlds are connected to each other, so players don't have to follow a set sequence when exploring New Super Mario Bros. U.
Up to four players can compete against each other in multiplayer mode
Mopsie
From time to time, a small, nimble thief - called Mopsie - appears in the map view. If you follow him into a course and catch him, you will receive useful items that the thief previously stole from Toad. Only those who catch Mopsie can secure one of the most powerful items in the game: the whip, which allows its owner to fly through an entire level. These new modes, characters, items and features ensure varied and long-lasting jump'n'run fun in the best Mario tradition. Thanks to this, fans of the series will not only jump for joy.

In Boost mode, an additional player can help the others
"As is usual with Mario titles, all movements are easy and smooth, even with the gigantic Wii U controller. The level of difficulty is more demanding than the extremely easy 3DS spin-off New Super Mario Bros. 2, but does not reach the high level of older parts. If you just can't get any further, you can turn on an assistant after a few screen deaths, which simply plays through the whole level automatically. [...]
Picture-book graphics: Nintendo has finally arrived in the HD era with the Wii U. A 2D jump-and-run game is perhaps not quite the right genre to flex the graphics muscles of a new console, but Mario's latest adventure has nevertheless gone to great lengths in terms of visuals. The characters in the harmonious comic style and, above all, the colorful backgrounds, which look as if they were painted with a paint box, are even a little reminiscent of the famous picture-book look of Yoshi's Island. [...]
Conclusion: New Super Mario Bros. U is a lot better than the 3DS version that was released in the summer. As an old hand, you can get through the levels pretty quickly, but interesting additional modes and, not least, the multiplayer part entice you to use the controller again. Mario's flying squirrel form and the cute baby Yoshis are also really fun."
